TF Design was honoured to be a part of the SAIF project. We enjoyed a remarkably productive working relationship with the iThemba LABS team.
The SAIF project, in our view, stands as a modern marvel that will deliver a two-fold benefit to the South African public. Firstly, it will provide a critical source of lifesaving isotopes. Secondly, it will serve as a valuable training ground, fostering the skills of our nation’s next generation of scientists and engineers.
For TF Design, a core legacy of any project we undertake lies in the development of human capital for the betterment of society. In this regard, our goals were firmly aligned with those of the National Research Foundation and the Department of Science and Innovation. We sincerely hope that the SAIF project will continue to bear fruit for decades to come, ultimately contributing to a more prosperous and equitable South Africa.
Our involvement in this project included the detailed design, manufacturing and installation of the isotope production facilities target stations, as well as installing the industrial network, control system and sensors for monitoring and controlling primary and ancillary processes involved in the SAIF project.
Some facts about the project include:
- Each target station weighs 28.22 Ton
- 20 Tons of Steel, Aluminium and Brass
- 7 Tons of lead
- 5 Tons of wax
- 94% of the components are unique and were manufactured locally.
- Each target station consists out of 886 unique parts
- The signal cabling had a total length of 24.2km
- The industrial backbone used 2km of optical fibre cable
